Chapter one
The sky was the same colour as dirty snow. Great grey clouds drifted past, dropping their load onto the steamy city below. Thunder rolled and lightning illuminated the dark and dingy alleyway, filled with stinking bin bags. At each flash of brilliant white, the gleaming red eyes of tens of hundreds of sewer rats glowed in a sinister manner. One brave young female scuttled out from her hiding place to grab a nut blown from a wilting plant on a balcony high above, there was a thud and a squeak and the sharp yellow eyes of a scrawny tabby cat joined the red glares of the rats.
